Tweet Up 2009 for the Orange Conference was a huge success!

About 35-40 different people gathered at the Varsity for onion rings and connections.

For most of us, it was a first time to connect with people we’ve followed for months and months.

Meeting new/old friends

I feel like today is going to be a reunion. Seriously. I’m not even talking about the Tweet Up tonight… that one’s going to be like a reunion of epic proportions.

This afternoon I’m picking up Matt McKee and Sam Luce at the airport. A few hours later Jonathan Cliff is flying in as well. Gina McClain is flying in later but I probably wont see her until the Tweet Up. These people have become some of my closest friends in ministry. I feel like it’s a gathering of old friends as we’ve experienced so much together. Funny thing is that the five of us have never met in person.

That’s the value of collaboration. The five of us are leading a brownbag lunch session on Friday about this very topic. If you’re yearning for this kind of community, be sure to atted this session.

Orange Leadership Forum (Part 5)

Reggie is a big fan of Apple computer. He equates ministry and leadership to Apple.

Between the Macintosh Plus and the MacBook Air, there have been 80 system upgrades. The technology has changed dramatically, but the mission has never changed.

As the church, we need to guard our mission.

Too many churches stick with their mission, but never upgrade their system. We need to lean into the younger generation and ask them to help us upgrade our systems. Frequently upgrade the system!

Sometimes we fail to connect people to our mission when making a system upgrade. When making changes, ALWAYS connect people back to the mission. Don’t talk about change before connecting them to the mission. Then they’ll know why the change needs to happen.

Too many churches have competing systems. When a computer has too competing systems, they cancel each other out and there is failure. The greatest thing I can do as a leader is to clarify the system.

Orange Leadership Forum (Part 4)

Here are four or five things that we should keep coming back to:

  1. Integrate leaders. How do they work together? How do you communicate to leaders and volunteers. You can’t get on the same page if you can’t get in the same room. Meet together!
  2. Refine the systems that communicate truth. These are the environments where we speak the truth and encourage connections. It’s up to us as a church to define the big pieces.
  3. Connect adults to the lives of our kids. As kids get older, the leader’s voice gets louder and as a child gets older, their decisions get more critical. We have to break down the lines that divide ministries and protect the investments we have made.
  4. Engage kids to be the church. How do you serve? How do you teach them to “BE the church?”
