Web Tools (Part 2): Managing Event/Registration Information

I wrote yesterday about utilizing your website for communication purposes. It’s an incredibly effective method to communicate to visitors as well as regulars/members. If you make it simple and neat (ideal for all, especially visitors) and up to date with fresh information, you’ll have a great tool. If not, people may visit your page once, but rarely again.
Today I want to focus on the idea of using your website as a tool for communication where your audience can communicate back to you… and I’m not just talking about providing a link to your email. I know some churches are using FellowshipOne software which I used to use (don’t ask). They have the weblink component which is absolutely marvelous! Web Tools (Part 1): Opening effective paths of communication

I know, totally boring title! However, this is a topic I’m very passionate about. I feel that if you’re not using the internet to communicate with your church… then you are behind the eight-ball (unless you live in a community that is not tech savvy at all… but those are becoming more and more rare). Nearly every church has a website. Regardless if it is pretty or not, is your content up to date, or did you write it 4 years ago when the site launched. Up until about 6 months ago, the church I worked at over 3 years ago still has a page that I wrote when I first got there in 2000. I hired myself…. 6 times.

Okay, that’s an exaggeration. I didn’t hire all of my staff (some were inherited). But, 4 out of the 6 people who work with me in CT Kids all have the same personality as me. For many years I’ve been a big fan of the Myers Briggs personality test. For all kinds of staff trainings, I’ve given this test to my team. Now there are all kinds of personality tests out there, but this is by far my favorite. It seems to go a step beyond the others as it divides the population into 16 different personality types. The Ultimate Lock-In – Managing chaos!

One more Ultimate Lock-In… in the bag! As further detailed here, I carried out the 2007 Ultimate Lock-In on Friday, April 20. Probably due to my youth and my quest for fun, I keep my kids up late. Many times, my kindergartners start dropping like flies once we get past the 2:00 am threshold. It was great fun and I think I’d only change a few things.
Here’s the details:
- $20 a kid ($15 each additional sibling)
- 186 kids
- 45 pizzas
- 2 school busses

Children’s Ministry org chart

This post is in response both to a series of post from the “Just Pudge” blog (post 1, post 2 and post 3) and in response to the work I’ve been doing to get ready for a staff retreat I’m leading in a week. We’ve covering some foundational basics of our ministry such as mission, vision as well as developing some job descriptions, processes and the like. One of the projects I’ve been working on is actually putting together the organization chart so everyone can visualize where everyone fits into this great ministry. Some of my staff feels overwhelmed and overworked. Do you know where your kids are?

One thing I am very passionate about is keeping track of kids who attend my church. Over 6 years ago I listened to tape of Jim Wideman talking about the importance of tracking kids. He equated tracking attendance to shepherding your flock. I immediately felt guilty. My church tracked numbers more so than it did individuals, so I ended up buying a cheap attendance program that would allow me to keep track of my kids. Because my church was not bought in to the idea of the tracking I wanted to do, it ended up being a lot more work for me and I din’t really achieve what I wanted.… Read the rest

They always wait until the last minute!

Last night I laughed out loud! From about 9:30 until 11:30, I watched over 30 online registrations come in for an upcoming Lock-In. The deadline was Wednesday and my intention was to pull down the registration at midnight. For about 30 minutes, a registration was hitting my email every two minutes. On Thursday morning I had 2 or 3 emails from forlorn parents begging for mercy as they had missed the deadline. Why do they always wait until the last minute?… Read the rest
