Kitchy Signs in Kidmin

Today I ate a burger (Number 15 burger in Texas) at one of the funniest restaurants I’ve ever been too. I kept cracking up at all the signs. Most of them would not have been appropriate in a church setting, but there were a few that would be tempting to install. Everyone enjoys a little slick humor in the form of a sign, but I’m not sure I’ve really noticed such signs in kidmin… or in most churches for that matter. I guess that many of these signs tend to border on the side of inappropriate, but that’s not always the case. So I’m curious, have you seen or do you have such signage in your church/kidmin? These would be signs that deliver smiles to adults and even has a disarming affect for those who are tense about their first church experience. Church should be fun, right?

Shopping Prank

I hate shopping in December. Crowds frustrate me and my least favorite thing to do is grocery shopping. I’m always willing to go, but since I hardly ever go, I’m always asking people where stuff is. That’s why I liked this video so much. I laughed more at this video than any viral video I’ve seen a very long time!

Angry Birds like you’ve never seen it!!!

I don’t really know if this is real or not, but one of my Children’s Pastors here at Gateway shared this video with me. It’s part of a T-Mobile commercial. I don’t have cable, so I wouldn’t know if the rest of the world has seen it already.

Yesterday I posted how we played Angry Birds at Illuminate and it was pretty incredible. However, what is shown in this commercial is mind boggling. My initial inclination is to think that this was a lot of fancy editing and staged effects, but it’s not so far out there to think that someone couldn’t build this. Could you imagine offering this experience for your kids or students? Amazing!

Angry Birds: LIVE!

Posted on 28. Nov, 2011 by .

I was going to not say anything about this until a few months from now in case we choose to play this in Nashville, but I’m starting to see several other posts about playing Angry Birds in Kidmin. I figured I might as well share my recent Angry Birds experience with you.

First of all, I’ll give credit where credit is due. I take no responsibility for incorporating Angry Birds into one of our General Sessions at Illuminate. My staff really wanted to do it and honestly, I discouraged it. It looked expensive and like a lot of work (and we didn’t have the money or the time). However, they insisted and they pulled it off (now I’m glad they did). Secondly, they didn’t come up with the live version of Angry Birds either. Corey, my Kid’s Pastor at Gateway’s South Campus came across the Shine Middles School site with great video and PDF instructions on creating the game.

When I saw what they put together, I was blown away. The birds looked incredible and when we started playing the angry birds music on stage, people went wild. We had no problem finding volunteers to play.

Below are some pictures of our version of Angry Birds. I’ve also included a link to Shine and their stuff (as well as a great video).

Also, here is another post of a different version of Angry Birds you can create for your Kidmin.

Desktop Accountability

A few years ago I started a monthly post where I published what my desktop looked like. Mostly, it was about creatively changing things up to keep the juices flowing. I’ve fallen out of that habit with a desktop that changes more on a quarterly basis. To make things worse, my desktop always tends to get very cluttered.

So, I’m submitting to you my September desktop. I don’t know what it means, but if fit my mood today. You can get your own September dektop design here. You’ll notice a handful of icons/files on the right. I’m sorry Jonathan Cliff, but that’s the best I could do for right now. Ha!

Last night I was cleaning up and my wife asked me what I was doing? I said, “cleaning up my desktop.” She replied, “Are you cleaning up because of the comments your friends made today?” My reply…. “yes!”

So, it’s good to have people in your life that give you a hard time… not because they hate your guts, but because they love you enough to pick on you. I’m glad I have a lot of people who like to pick on me… a lot.

Hacked again!

On Saturday, my good friend Matt McKee helped me with a Q & A session with Jim Wideman during the first general session. We took questions via text messaging that came through my Google Voice account which is a part of my Goolge/Gmail account. Because my computer was being used elsewhere, I logged into my Google Voice account on Matt McKee’s computer.

He informed me yesterday via a public tweet that his computer was still logged into my gmail account. Perfect. I only have the last 7 years of personal email storred in that account. Good thing I trust Matt… otherwise he might know all my secrets.

It took me a few hours to recognize though that he did indeed leave record of his presence. First of all, he changed my theme profile to a cute pink and blue profile fitting for a 13 year old girl. Nice. Secondly, he changed my profile picture to his picture. I didn’t notice that right away either. Actually, my wife called me this morning and she seemed to have gotten distracted when I answered and the first question out of her mouth was “Why am I seeing a picture of Matt on my phone when I’m calling you?”

Good one Matt. I owe you.

Fortunately, I work hard not to click on unfamiliar attachments or facebook/twitter spam that might compromise my accounts. However, I need a better level of defense in protecting me from getting hacked by my friends (Last May they hacked my facebook at the Orange conference immediately after I told them about how to do it). With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Plotting for the Birmingham Illuminate

Check out this recent post from my new friend Dustin Nickerson from Washington state. For several weeks, he and I talked about him being the officially back-up to the back-up in case any of my speakers got sick. I didn’t realized how seriously he was taking this semi-important (not really) assignment. Click here to see his evil plan.

Pray for good health for all the speakers, staff and attendees at Illuminate Birmingham!

What Dustin doesn’t know is that 3 of my 4 speakers got food poising last year. Of all the great places to take them to eat here in Austin… I took them to the place where the view is the best… and the food is gross. :)

Dustin… I have a feeling that in the future, I’ll have you speak at Illuminate. I’d love to see your outline for the breakout on aliens!

Pirate Face… Day 7

Posted on 01. Aug, 2011 by .

Thanks to everyone who has been praying for my pirate face. It really is an honor to have people all around the US praying, many of whom I’ve never met in person. You guys are amazing!

So, I figured I’d give regular updates on this little “disorder” I have at the moment.

Well, my condition got worse. Not much, but when I posted last week, it hadn’t gotten as bad as I though it was going to get. By Thursday, I think it bottomed out. You can see from the pictures below the difference between Monday night and now.

However, I’m still grateful that it really is still a slight case. Most people don’t notice it at all. Really, it’s only when I laugh and smile that people can tell. For that I’m very grateful.

Here’s the good news that I’ve learned. It seems like everyone knows someone who has had it and I’ve been able to compare stories. The shortest bout was someone’s uncle that I met today who only had it for 10-15 days. The longest bout was someone who had it for 9 months (although I’ve read that it can last longer… but it’s rare). So, I’m encouraged that this thing is probably going to go away and life will return to normal.

So, here’s the funny thing I’ve learned. Today I taught a baptism class for a group of 15 or so kids and their parents. I learned that I have to be highly focused on annunciation, otherwise I sound a little like Sylvester the Cat. You know, “Thufferin’ Thuccotash!” So, if I didn’t pay close attention to the endings of my words, the weaker side of my mouth wanted to make slight farting noises. Not cool… but for a group of kids… pretty funny.

I am grateful for good friends though. Jonathan Cliff and his family drove through Austin and stayed the night. They brought my 4 year-old son a puzzle, but it was difficult enough, I think that they intended it for me. Maybe they were thinking that doing this puzzle one time a day would be the mental exercise I need to get my brain working correctly again. Thanks a lot Cliffs!

So, that’s my weekly health update. Keep sending prayers when you think of me.
