March Madness for Kidmin

Posted on 14. Mar, 2011 by .

The excitement is in the air. Can you smell it? Basketball? I’m not talking about basketball. I’m talking about the 2011 Kidmin Blog Madness competition hosted by Ministry to Children. Last year after three rounds, I finished in 3rd place. Not too shabby. Well, it’s March again and the brackets are set. I’m in the Southwest division up against several great Kidmin blogs. Since you’re on my blog right now, I’m going to ask you to head over and throw a vote my way. You can vote for four blogs in each region. The Southwest region is the last of four and my blog (Chidlren’s Ministry Online) is in the #1 spot.

So, thanks for your help! Again, you can get there by clicking here!

Winner of God’s Kids Easter Resource

Posted on 16. Jan, 2011 by .

Well, we had a handful of tweets go out as well as some really great comments on the original post. If you’re looking for some great Easter ideas, I’d recommend reading through some of the comments. So for every daily tweet, I put the name in the virtual hat. For every comment, I also put a name in the virtual hat. Last of all, I chose one idea that I liked the most and put it in the hat five times.

The idea I liked the most was from Kim with the Maundy Thursday Family Service. I’ll be honest, I’ve grown up in the church my entire life and have never heard of Maundy Thursday. I love the concept, especially how they’ve created a family experience around it. I’ll say that the second idea I liked was Susan’s idea with all the crosses in the yard, so thanks for adding that. So, Kim I put your name in an additional five times.

So, I ran all the names through a simple randomizer at random.org, and the winner is…

Kim! Woo hoo! Congrats to you! I’ll get with you later one details. Remember, you can still pick up this great resource here.

Using my iPad for an iWedding

I’m excited that today I’m going to perform my first wedding using my iPad. Being in Austin, 90% of my weddings are at outdoor locations and I’m usually trying to make sure my notes don’t fly away in the wind. I usually carry a nice black binder for my notes, so my iPad with it’s black case should look nice and sleek, plus I don’t have to worry about wind.

I’m going to have to enlarge the font size of the text as its just a little too small as it is on a regular word document, but that should solve the only issue I was facing. I’ll write more about the experience tomorrow. I was going to use it at my last wedding in October, but chickened out at the last minute. I’m committed now as everyone and the rehearsal already saw it, so they’re expecting it.

A phrase I’m not saying anymore

Posted on 14. Jan, 2011 by .

Call me strange, but sometimes I re-analyze the words that come out of my mouth. At times I ask myself, “Do I even know what that means?” Or I ask myself, “Does that even mean what I think it means.” I think I became more self aware when be began teaching baptism classes for kids and I talk about words like “Lord,” Confess” and Saved” as words that kids often hear and even say but don’t have any idea what they mean. It’s funny, really.

So, a few years ago I was praying with someone and we prayed a hedge of protection around them for safety. I think they may have been traveling or something. I can’t even remember if I prayed it or not. Later I started thinking, “What the heck is a hedge of protection and why on earth do I use those words in particular.” I can only imagine praying for someone who was maybe very new to faith or not even yet a believer and what would be going on in their head as I started praying about hedges.

I know, I know… I don’t want to put down tradition or scriptural phrases, but I really do think we can move to a new term without losing the meaning. The scripture often say that so and so begat so and so or Adam “knew” Eve, but we don’t quite say it that way anymore, do we?

So from now on, I’ve decided I’m not praying for hedges anymore. Yeah, I’ll still pray for people’s protection, but I’ll come up with something more current than shrubbery.

Before writing this post, I did a quick Google search about hedges of protection and actually came across a few interesting discussions which you can see here and here. However, I was very pleased to come across a video from comedian Tim Hawkins. Ha! I’m not the only one who thinks hedges are odd.

I’m so lame

I haven’t blogged in close to 10 days. Things have actually been slowing down a little, but I have all these little pet projects that are all coming due this week. Oh, and I’ve been doing a little extra chilling out and reading books and stuff like that. I’m heading up to Fort Worth for a few days so I’ll probably be quite here until Monday.

Now that’s just weird…

If you read this blog, you know that I talk about books, videos, music and all kinds of other resources. Whenever I can, I’ll link over to the product I’m reviewing at Amazon. Why? Two reasons really:

  • Amazon rocks! Why ever leave your house to get stuff you want any more, right?
  • I’m an Amazon reseller. That means if you buy something from Amazon after I send you there, Amazon shares a small percentage of the sale with me. It’s not much, but it pays my hosting bills and such.

So, I like to look at my resellers account and see what people bought. It’s always exciting to see the resources purchased that I recommended.

However, if you zip over to Amazon from one of my links and end up buying something entirely different, I still get a percentage of the sale. It’s cool. I remember a few years ago someone clicked over to look at a book I recommended and bought a blu-ray player. That was nice. However, sometimes I laugh so hard when I see the things people buy after following one of my links.

Last week someone came to this website, clicked on one of my recommended Amazon links and bought…. a bidet hand held sprayer.

Huh?

Sure, it was a little random, but it made my day! Just read a few of the product’s reviews and see if it doesn’t bring a big smile to your face. Oh, and feel free to buy one while you’re at it. :)
