Early Childhood Room Names

Posted on 01. Jun, 2009 by in Early Childhood, Fresh Ideas

Okay, I’ve need a little outside inspiration. I’ve been thinking about changing the names of two rooms in our Early Childhood area. So, here are our existing rooms.

2 & 3 year old classrooms

  • Tumbleweed Trail
  • Little Lagoon
  • Kids Kingdom
  • Asteroid Alley

4 year old – kindergarten classrooms

  • Beach Boulevard
  • Amazon Avenue
  • Treehouse Trail
  • City Circle

Okay, here’s my dilema. The last four rooms are classrooms we added in January and they’re part of Kids Quest Backyard. They all have street themes. When we opened these rooms, Tumbleweed Trail has been previously retired, but we opened it back up again in February. So, we have two rooms that end with “trail.” Also, Asteroid Alley is a feeder room to Amazon Avenue. People are constantly mixing these up and it sometimes causes confusion. People accidently say Amazon Alley or Asteroid Avenue and so we don’t really know what room a person is talking about.

So, here is where I need help. The Backyard names are new and since they’re tied both to room themes (murals) and the street theme, it’s going to be harder to change them. So, I think that Tumbleweed Trail and Asteroid Alley may be the ones that need new names.

Tumbleweed Trail – It has a wild west theme to it. It has a cactus on the wall with other western type theme elements. In my head I’m even thinking “Cactus Canyon.” But, I’m open to all kinds of ideas.

Asteroid Alley – To be honest, this is my favorite room. It has a spaceship look. The walls are black with stars and planets all around and there is a rocket ship in the corner. So, I need a fun name to replace this as well. Think exciting destination. Oh, and in case you didn’t notice, the first and second letter of the room need to start with the same letter.

Sounds like you have a naming mess on your hands. What if they all just 1 name instead of 2 or just put the word the in front of the place. For instance, 1. The Tumbleweed, 2. The Lagoon, 3. The Kingdom 4. The asteroid 5. The Beach, 6. The Treehouse, The City, The Canyon, ect. This way there is less confusion and you can keep your environment until you are ready to overhaul the whole thing.

Just to add to the restrictions (eliminating the otherwise good suggestion of Cosmic Corner) the nursery rooms nearby are also named alliteratively:

      Cozy Corner
      Bubble Babies
      Heavenly Haven
      Grasshopper Grove

I agree with Cactus Canyon being good… but I’m too stuck on Asteroid Alley to want to change it.

Funny, at first I don’t think I liked your idea. Actually I did, I just didn’t see it as being realistic at the start. I’m not looking to re-brand all of our rooms at this time, just those two. However, I’m looking at a complete re-brand of our ministry name in 2010 and at that point I could easily see us doing what you suggested. Actually, I really like it. I’m going to have to ponder on that one for a while.

So, for now I still need a two word name for two rooms, but I’m looking to the future Matt. Thanks for the idea.

I would suggest Cowboy Causeway, Western Way, or Cactus Canal.

For the other room I would say Space Street, Rocket Road, Enterprise Easeway (joke), or Planet Place. Just a thought.

      I vote for Matt’s idea.
If you’re overhauling anyway, this could be a great test run to try something new-ish.
Call it a “beta” test… if that helps you feel more professional. :)

1.Tumbleweed Trail (has always kinda been a mouthful)
2.I like Wildwest Way. Also liked Cactus Canyon (too bad CC is already used twice Cozy Corner and City Circle)
3.City Circle > Skyscraper Square (if you are not wanting to repeat the CC)
4.Amazon Avenue > Rainforest Road, Marshland Manor, Woodland Way. (Can’t picture the mural. So, that is about all I could think of.

      Good Luck!

I’m with you Matt! That’s exactly what I did when we moved from the old church to the new church. I found it less confusing for all involved and I wasn’t stuck with each room needing an overhaul. I believe if we use the “The” in front it, it allows freedom to change environments within the context of “The” name. Less is more works for me!

I love the names and I would like to add Blueberry Surprise. What colors make up blue and how many things can we find that go with the primary colors.
