In search of the perfect printer

Okay, I need a little help from some fellow tech geeks. I have a 6 year old Dell laser printer which has been a fantastic little printer. I was using a wireless printer server for about 3 years until it crashed and burned a few months ago. I could never get my mac to print wirelessly, so I always had to email stuff to the PC and print from there. I’ve been setting aside some cash and I think I have enough now to get what I want. So, here is what I’m looking for and I’m hoping that someone can tell me what I could get.

Do you use Things?

I don’t mean to confuse any of you with the title. More than likely only some of the Mac users understood my question right away. I’m wanting opinions and thoughts on the task management software – Things. I remember hearing many say good things about it in the past, but I wanted some details. Anyone using it now who swears by it? Is it worth the money? Why is it better than Remember the Milk or other similar systems.

I just finished a good book on productivity and I want to take my to-do list to the next level and it looks like Things could help me do what I need it to do (with tags and such).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!… Read the rest

Two days with an iPad

On Friday morning I woke up and realized that something was wrong with my laptop (MacBook Pro). It wouldn’t boot up at all. Crud! It was Friday morning and the absolute soonest I could get someone to look at it would be Sunday. So, I decided I would see how well the Ipad was going to work for me.

Several months ago, someone gave me an iPad and up until this time, it’s been more of a recreational device. When needing to get any serious work done, I’d just default to the laptop as it’s easier to use and I’m more familiar with it. So, this was a great chance to really test it out.

Well, all I can say is that my experience was pretty good.… Read the rest

Do you need an iFriend?

I just came across this video and I just had to share. I grew up using a Mac. We always had an Apple in the house since the mid 1980′s. My first computer was a Mac (I was the only guy in my entire dorm with with a Mac), one of the reasons I switched to a PC right after college). For the last two years, I’ve been a Mac user again with my MacBook Pro and beloved iPhone. However, I’m not a kool-aid drinker. I’m probably going to get the iPhone4, but I’ve been telling everyone that it will probably be my last iPhone as the competition is getting really interesting and I anticipate having many compelling reasons to not get the 5th gen iPhone.… Read the rest

My iPad prediction

macbook-vs-ipadOkay, two months ago I posted my thoughts on the iPad after the announcement. It seems like this device was a lot more appealing before people knew exactly what it would be like. It’s the butt of a lot of jokes. I’ve really only met a few people who really, really want one. Actually, I think there are a lot more people who really want one, it’s just that there’s not as many people willing to fork over the cash for it. So, here’s my prediction.

I think the iPad is going to be wildly successful. I really think that once people get these in their hands and play with it a little, they’re going to want one. I do think that the 2nd generation is going to be the killer device and they’ll sell even more of them.… Read the rest

Browser Wars

6a00e5503060a388330120a6a50fdc970c-500piYesterday I announced that Google Chrome was my app of the week, mostly becasue of the extensions capability. I’ve been using Firefox for the last several years and have been very excited to move to Chrome. However, I realized that most people generally use Internet Explorer if they have a PC. If they have a Mac, then there’s a good chance they’re using Safari. What browser you use is totally a personal choice, but I think that most of these people use these browsers simple becasue it’s what was on their computer when they got it and they’re just happy with it. The problem is that most of these people don’t know that there could possibly be a much better experience right around the corner.… Read the rest

Google news

fiber_houseAs much as Sam Luce and Jim Wideman are Apple fanboys, I’m just about as fanatical about Google. Maybe not as much thought, Sam once told me that he’d drink Steve Job’s bathwater… at least I think that’s what he said. :)

What I love so much about Google is that they push through glass ceilings to promote progress. Yeah, they’ve got an agenda. They want to sell ads that you’ll see and click on. But if that means I get to have access to quality tools, a faster internet and free services in exchange for a small strip of text ads on my sidebar, I’m up for that… especially when they’re relevant to what I want or what I need. In recent years they pushed congress to auction off the 700 MHz spectrum.… Read the rest

The big announcement at Apple today

Earlier today I wrote about anticipating today’s big announcement. Several years ago they announced the iPhone and it made significant changes. Before the iPhone, most people only had data enabled phones for work. I (along with most of the world) would have been shocked if Apple didn’t announce a tablet. And they did. They’re calling it the iPad.

Here’s what I was most curious about though.

  1. How bad am I going to want it?
  2. Is it going to be a game changer?

I’ll get to those two questions in a second though. Following the twitter feed, the general public seemed to have the same impression that I was having. Is this it? It’s just a bigger iPhone. Sure, it’s cool and I’d certainly rather kick back on the couch with this as opposed to my iPhone or laptop.… Read the rest

Is Apple going to change our lives today?

Today Apple has a big announcement. It could be the iPhone 4G. Some say it could be iLife10. However, most are anticipating an Apple tablet. Some are calling it the iSlate or just Slate. A 10 inch iPhone like device that uses the iPhone OS. I must say, I’m more than curious on this one. I love the idea of a tablet, but I’m not sure why I need one. At some point I’m sure I’ll have an e-reader like the Kindle, but I haven’t felt compelled to have one like I did with the iPhone.

So, there may not even be a tablet. But if there is, I can’t wait to see the presentation. Other than it being a cool gadget, I really don’t know why I need it and how it’s going to change my life.… Read the rest

I may use a Mac, but I didn’t drink the Kool Aid

I don’t know what kind of Apple hate this post is going to bring down on me, but I’ve just gotta vent.

I was having a conversation with a fellow blogger yesterday (I won’t say any names as to not place a target on this person as well). I was talking about my current email situation. Last week I switched my work email over to gmail becasue I so passionately hate Entourage. Really, my biggest problem is that I just needed to be able to freakin’ sync my google calendar with my work calendar in any way. I’ve explored every option available and the best solution I had was to forward my email to gmail and use a google calendar. The positive side of things is that my wife can now see my calendar and all is well on that front.… Read the rest
