Why Austin doesn’t believe
Posted on 24. Apr, 2009 by Kenny.
Church strategy is interesting. Churches understand that Easter is a big Sunday for the church, but the series that follows Easter is crucial. The plan is to draw people back after Easter. The series we started last week is called “Why Austin doesn’t believe.”
Yes, technically we’re in the Bible belt and Texas is know for old fashion and conservative ideals. However, Austin is the exception to that rule. The rest of Texas like Austin for the music and the food, but think we can “have our liberal weirdos.” Ha! Yes, Austin is way different from any other place I’ve ever lived. So many people are FAR from God and many of them are open and searching. Gateway has created an incredible experience for people who are open and searching.… Read the rest

Easter Recap
Posted on 15. Apr, 2009 by Kenny.
I broke my Sabbath rule this week. Yeah, I’m blaming it on Easter. Sara and I have been celebrating an actual 24 hour (at least) sabbath rest every weekend for the last 6 weeks or so. We had Saturday services this Easter, so I headed up to the church at noon to get ready. It was supposed to rain and we were supposed to take family Easter portraits, so I went up early enough to figure out exactly where we would take pictures I also went up early to finish setting up Fellowship One as I had to create new activities and schedules for Easter services.
At 5:00, we had a HUGE crowd, I wasn’t expecting the turnout. We had some lag issues with Fellowship One which caused a little bit of a backup in our check-in lines.… Read the rest

Cross Timbers Revisited
Posted on 19. Aug, 2008 by Kenny.
This past weekend I went back to North Fort Worth for a few days. Josh, my intern that worked (and lived) with me all summer wrapped up his time in Austin last Thursday. When we were planning the internship, I intentionally planned to take him to DFW and see a variety of multi-site churches. We planned to visit both Fellowship Church (the Grapevine and Fort Worth campus) as well as the Fort Worth campus of Life Church. These are some of the leading multi-site churches. However, the multi-site church that I knew best was Cross Timbers. Although I had been to DFW 3 or 4 times since being let go last November, I hadn’t actually visited the church since November.… Read the rest

Gateway with a twist of Indian
Posted on 30. May, 2008 by Kenny.

This is one of the things I really love about my church, Gateway Community Church.
We’re in a series called “Dialed In: Conversations with the World.” Actually, it’s a series about other world religions. I’m sure many people would ask, why would you devote an entire series to other religions? Isn’t that something you’d teach in a small group or special extra-curricular class? Yeah, I think we actually do that as well. But you may not know our audience. Although Texas is a good ‘ol conservative/right-winged/republican state, Austin is not. Austin is an odd city with a weird vibe. It’s definitely Texas to the core, but with a liberal twist. A significant number of our church came to Christ at Gateway and a significant number of those who came to Christ were not your “grew up in the church but never made a decision” type of people.… Read the rest

Quick look at Gateway
Posted on 13. Apr, 2008 by Kenny.
I tired to snap some good pictures of Gateway church while I was out there last week. Unfortunately, the battery died on me while taking pictures, so I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of all of the campus.
The building is two years old. For several years the church leased an old Jewish synagogue closer to Downtown Austin. They eventually bought land a little further north and built a few buildings. The property looks like it is pretty much maxed out with a little growing room for maybe one more building (maybe for student ministries or something). In the new multi-site model, this really isn’t such a big deal as the idea isn’t necessarily to build a mega-campus.… Read the rest

Woo Hoo! I Just Got a Job!!!
Posted on 11. Apr, 2008 by Kenny.
Ha! I really couldn’t think of any title more appropriate!
On Thursday I got the call from Gateway Church, a church I’ve been talking to for the past 10 weeks. In just a few weeks, I’ll officially begin my new position as the Next Generation Pastor. This entire process has been an absolute blessing and a testimony of God’s goodness. I’ve already written this story out once today on my personal blog, but for this blog my audience is different. So, here goes.
Six months ago I was sitting on my couch with my wife having a very difficult conversation. My church was an amazing church doing some incredible things in North Texas; however, responsibilities were weighing heavily upon me and my heart was not engaged as it needed to be.… Read the rest
