Well over a year ago I started Front Friday and I think I only posted two or three times. So, let’s just say that this is a very infrequent blog day. However, someone passed this along to me a few weeks ago and I thought it would fit perfectly for “Font Friday.”

When doing any design work, picking the right font is key. So, here’s a fun little chart that will help you in picking out the right font for your project.

It’s called Sketch Rockwell. As you can see here, I used it for the Orange Tweet Up a few years ago. It’s a fun little font with a lot of character. I think that with this font, you’ve got to go big and bold, otherwise the font is going to look a little messy. I’ve probably only used this font for one other thing (this font would look very overused pretty quickly).

How would I use this font again? I think that if I was doing any kind of media relating to school (like a back to school event), I’d experiment with this font in white on the image of a green chalkboard.… Read the rest

You can also see this font as the title of my friend Ryan Frank’s blog here. I’m telling you, I’ve got an eye for fonts.

Right away, the bold, black font popped out at me. Immediately I said to myself, “I really like that font. I gotta have it.” So, I did the shameless thing and email KidsMatter.org to ask them what font they used. Actually, I was in luck. I know the guy (Evan) who designs these weekly emails and he was more than happy to throw me a bone. Thanks a million Evan.

The font is called Kenyan Coffee. It’s got a 1920′s New York art deco look and feel that’s strong but unique. To do what they did in this email, I probably would have defaulted to Arial Black, but Kenyan Coffee is a great substitute.… Read the rest

After having watched this video a few times, I think of these characters when I see the fonts either on my computer or in the wild.

The video does have some language, so I must rate it PG!

I’m not ashamed, I love my fonts. Although I’m not a professional, I do like to dabble in graphic design. When starting a project, I almost always start with the font. I sort through hundreds of fonts looking for just the right one. Then I design around the font. I know know if this is right or wrong, it’s just the way I do it. So I really do love my fonts. I enjoy recognizing fonts I design with out in the wild. If you remember, I’m also passionate in my dislike for certain fonts as well.

Why am I writing this? Well, I am passionate about this and that should be enough reason alone. However, I’ve found that every Children’s Pastor wears multiple hats, one of which is “graphic designer.” Few things bother me more than a poorly designed flyer or sign.… Read the rest
