Give-Away: God’s Kids Easter Resource
Posted on 12. Jan, 2011 by Kenny.
Yesterday I blogged about God’s Kids Worship’s “A Big Basket of Easter Songs.”
The kind people at God’s Kids Worship want to give one away… to you. Nice of them, huh? It’s a $29.98 value that you can have by simply retweeting the following message:
Win God’s Kids Worship: Easter Songs resource pack for your #kidmin and get cool & creative Easter ideas. Click here: http://goo.gl/ohZxv
Don’t spam twitter though, only tweet the message one time a day. Leave a comment below as well telling me the most creative thing you’ve done for your kids at Easter.
So, I’ll put your name in the “virtual” hat for every tweet you post (remember, only one per day) as well as one time for every comment you leave (you can post more than one comment, but it has to be a different Easter idea for it to count an additional time). If I like your idea the most, I’ll put your name in the hat 5 more times. I’ll then draw out one name and send that person a copy of the resource. Sounds like fun, huh?
Contest ends on Saturday at 11:59 PM! Ready… Set…. GO!!!!

Ideas that didn’t work
Posted on 02. Oct, 2010 by Kenny.
Today’s post during Orange Week was supposed to be about Orange ideas that didn’t work.
I had a hard time coming up with any really great “stand-out” examples.
It’s not because we don’t make mistakes, because that’s not true. It may be because we’ve not taken any big risks lately where we’ve given ourselves the opportunity to win big or fall flat on our faces. We’ve been playing it pretty safe lately, doing things that have been successful and I’m not completely satisfied with that. So, I hope that a year from now I can tell you about some really dumb ideas we tried (the focus being on the word “tried” not “dumb”).
Here are a few things that have been pretty unsuccessful:
- Take home papers like Refrigerator Cards and God Time Cards. We do these even though we know that most don’t make it out of the parking lot. However, we’ve not come up with a good alternative as of yet. Maybe I’ll have someone on my team read Jonathan’s post and we’ll implement something similar to what he’s doing.
- Seasonal outreaches. Last year we held two outreaches. One was durring halloween where the plan was to send bags home with kids to “trick or treat” with their parents the week of Halloween for canned food for our food pantry. I think that the problem revolved more about communication and implementation for us, but it was a pretty big flop. During the Christmas holidays we had an outreach for needy families where kids wore their crazy socks to church and picked sock ornaments off our Christmas tree (which had  a list of items to purchase or bring the following week). We we’re pretty successful in the sense that we got lots of stuff, but I’m not convinced it was much of a family experience. I think most moms went out and bought the stuff.
- Integrated team. Don’t get the wrong idea about me. I fully believe in Orange and really do want to see it fully lived out at my church. However, we’ve still got a long way to go. Our student and children’s ministries marginally work together and is far from integrated. However, we’ve taken some pretty significant strides in the last month. I expect some big changes this year.

After my Kidmin/Orange marathon, this is how I feel
Posted on 02. May, 2010 by Kenny.
Every year I look forward to my week at Orange. Rather than just take in a few days of conference, I try to get the biggest bang for my buck. I get to Atlanta a few days early to see some family as well as visit North Point Church or some other church so I can observe and learn from what others are doing. Then the conference begins and I typically have every minute booked. In addition to attending the conference and breakouts, I’m meeting people having conversations and learning from others. Typically, every meal is booked and I’m rarely back to my hotel room before midnight.
I love it; however, I think I’m done with marathon conference tours for a while. Next time I’ll come in for the conference and then I’ll go back home. It’s a lot of time to be away from my family. I miss them. It’s an entire week to be away from my team and my work. Although I usually come back from these conferences pretty pumped up and ready to charge forward, I just feel it’s a little too much.
So, it was fun. I’m looking forward to processing all I’ve learned, both from Orange and from the churches I’ve visited. I’ve also got a project or two that I’m ready to tackle. I’m kind of excited about those too. Today’s my last day in Atlanta, I’m going to enjoy it the best I can and then get back to my real life tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s Kidmin/Orange marathon a total blast!

Brainstorming vs. Improv
Posted on 18. May, 2009 by Kenny.
I was at a birthday party last night and met a guy. He’s a very successful business man responsible for many start-ups. He was recently at a conference where an executive from Google was being interviewed or spoke (I don’t remember the details). Supposedly, Google decision makers take part in improv classes.
Why?
The brainstorming process says, “that’s a good idea, but…”
Improvisation says, “that’s a good idea, and…”
So, I don’t know exactly what that means yet, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Here’s what I’m thinking. Many ideas in the brainstorming process only make it to the white board. Although it’s an incredibly collaborative process where ideas birth new ideas, usually only a few make it into reality. What I see in my head and what gets written on the board aren’t always the same thing. However, in improvisational action, ideas take shape, ideas are alive and moving and other decision makers jump in, add their parts and help the idea evolve.
Intriguing concept for sure? What does this look like in reality? I have no idea?
Any thoughts on how this might be applied in a practical sense?

Late night meditations
Posted on 12. May, 2009 by Kenny.
My head is swimming.
I’ve got so many thoughts floating around in my head right now.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve had so many thoughts like this… big thoughts.
I plan to proces them out loud here on the blog to some degree.
