Using my iPad for an iWedding

I’m excited that today I’m going to perform my first wedding using my iPad. Being in Austin, 90% of my weddings are at outdoor locations and I’m usually trying to make sure my notes don’t fly away in the wind. I usually carry a nice black binder for my notes, so my iPad with it’s black case should look nice and sleek, plus I don’t have to worry about wind.

I’m going to have to enlarge the font size of the text as its just a little too small as it is on a regular word document, but that should solve the only issue I was facing. I’ll write more about the experience tomorrow. I was going to use it at my last wedding in October, but chickened out at the last minute.… Read the rest

App of the week: Dropbox

Posted on 09. Jan, 2011 by .

Over a year ago, I wrote about dropbox for the first time. I started using it because my preferred file storage/sharing application (Live Sync) wasn’t playing nice with OS X Snow Leopard. One year later and I’m using dropbox for just about everything. Sorry Microsoft, you took a great application and messed it all up.

Although the app has been available for a long time, I recently just installed dropbox on my iPhone and iPad. Amazing! One of the more frustrating issues I face with my iPhone and iPad is file management. Its like there isn’t really any place to stick documents and things. Usually I resort to emailing them to myself and just opening it up as an attachment (if you know of another file management system for the iPhone/iPad, let me know).… Read the rest

Two days with an iPad

On Friday morning I woke up and realized that something was wrong with my laptop (MacBook Pro). It wouldn’t boot up at all. Crud! It was Friday morning and the absolute soonest I could get someone to look at it would be Sunday. So, I decided I would see how well the Ipad was going to work for me.

Several months ago, someone gave me an iPad and up until this time, it’s been more of a recreational device. When needing to get any serious work done, I’d just default to the laptop as it’s easier to use and I’m more familiar with it. So, this was a great chance to really test it out.

Well, all I can say is that my experience was pretty good.… Read the rest

Another creative way to use the iPad in ministry

Posted on 08. Dec, 2010 by .

So, here’s one more use I can add to my list of great way the iPad can be used in ministry. The iBand. North Point is so creative and fun, I wish I’d been there to see it. Obviously it was a fun piece, but I’d probably discourage any church from going to an exclusive, weekly iPad band.

Using the iPad for check-in

I’ll be the first to admit. Using the iPad for check-in was beyond cool. It’s funny how many of you commented and messaged me for more information about using the iPad for check in. A few weeks ago when I first wrote about the idea of using the iPad for check-in, that post got more hits than anything I’ve written in a long time. I think I know what it is. You really want and iPad, don’t you?

Ha! Well, here is what I posted a few weeks ago along with links and video. This is where it all started. :)

I wasn’t overly creative. I simply copied what they did. I downloaded WinAdmin on my iPad. From there, I ran into problems.… Read the rest

Using an iPad for check-in

I have to admit, this is one of the coolest things I’ve seen relating to check-in. This has me interested enough that I’m about to run out and get an iPad to try this out for myself. I’ve actually already asked to borrow someone’s iPad so I can play with it. Check it out.

Now this is Fellowship One check-in, but because they’re using remote desktop to accomplish this, they could really use this with almost any check-in system. You can read all about how they did this on the Fellowship One developer’s blog.

In some ways, I see this being a really cool way to offer an assisted check-in that is cool and personable. We currently don’t do any self check-in, but this would allow us to still do assisted check-in without it feeling like the volunteer is on the other side of the counter.… Read the rest

App of the week: Settlers of Catan on iPhone/iPad

Posted on 27. Jun, 2010 by .

I’m a huge fan of the game, “The Settlers of Catan.” Over a year ago Wired Magazine wrote an article about this game called Monopoly Killer that describes how this game and others like it are redefining the board game genre. I’ve been playing Settlers for 6-8 years and I LOVE it. So, I just found out this week that there is an iPhone app where you can play multi-player or just against the computer. I don’t get to play very often, so this app is great for scratching the itch.

I’ll be honest, it’s a little hard to play on the little screen that is my iPhone. However, I think the experience would be considerably different on the iPad. So, if you have an iPad and you’d like to check out a very unique but fun game, pick up the Catan app.… Read the rest

My iPad prediction

macbook-vs-ipadOkay, two months ago I posted my thoughts on the iPad after the announcement. It seems like this device was a lot more appealing before people knew exactly what it would be like. It’s the butt of a lot of jokes. I’ve really only met a few people who really, really want one. Actually, I think there are a lot more people who really want one, it’s just that there’s not as many people willing to fork over the cash for it. So, here’s my prediction.

I think the iPad is going to be wildly successful. I really think that once people get these in their hands and play with it a little, they’re going to want one. I do think that the 2nd generation is going to be the killer device and they’ll sell even more of them.… Read the rest

The big announcement at Apple today

Screen shot 2010-01-27 at 3.27.35 PM

Earlier today I wrote about anticipating today’s big announcement. Several years ago they announced the iPhone and it made significant changes. Before the iPhone, most people only had data enabled phones for work. I (along with most of the world) would have been shocked if Apple didn’t announce a tablet. And they did. They’re calling it the iPad.

Here’s what I was most curious about though.

  1. How bad am I going to want it?
  2. Is it going to be a game changer?

I’ll get to those two questions in a second though. Following the twitter feed, the general public seemed to have the same impression that I was having. Is this it? It’s just a bigger iPhone. Sure, it’s cool and I’d certainly rather kick back on the couch with this as opposed to my iPhone or laptop.… Read the rest
