Brand New Orange Leaders App

Last week I blogged about the new Orange Conference iPhone App. Although I was sworn to secrecy, I knew that another app was in the works that would take it to the next level. Now it’s here, the Orange Leaders App for iPhone and Android. It’s a killer app that goes beyond the conference and links you to all things Orange Leaders throughout the rest of the year. It’s going to be a great tool this year at the conference as it will better manage my schedule than the other app, but it is also socially connected and will allow me to connect with others attending the same breakouts as me.

I highly suggest you go to your phone’s app store and download the app today.… Read the rest

App of the week: Orange Conference App

photo1How could I not feature this app? Only nine more days until the most anticipated conference for student and children’s ministry and now I have an app to get me even more excited. You can download the Orange Conference Countdown right here.

Have you ever been at a conference talking to someone and they ask you what breakout you’re in next, or you can’t remember what time the next session starts, so you begin digging through your SWAG bag for your official conference notebook with the schedule and the breakout information. Or maybe your conference has the schedule on your lanyard. Either way, you’re digging around through all your Jesus junk and scanning the 5 point font on the back of your lanyard trying to figure out where you were supposed to be like a conference nerd.… Read the rest

Why do I want your app?

Yesterday I wrote about what I feel makes a great iPhone app, or app for any device for that matter.

It seems like now, getting your own app is all the rage. I’m not sure I blame anyone for wanting their own app. Do I want an app? Sure. Do I need my own app? Probably not. Why would I want an app? Because I can then say that I have an app and I can tell all my friends and my parents to download it. I’m sure that’s probably not a good enough reason to launch my own app.

So, I know several people who have recently launched new iPhone apps. Some I’ve kept. Others I’ve deleted after opening once.… Read the rest

What makes a great iPhone App?

iphone_theres_an_app_for_that_t_shirt-p235968994486945626t5tr_400“There’s an app for that.”

It’s a famous phrase that’s commonly used now days. I’ve been accused by someone on my staff of saying it too much myself. Yes, I love my iPhone and I love finding great new apps to enhance my live/experience. However, I’m going to challenge this famous phrase. Just becasue there’s an app for that doesn’t mean there should be. Right?

I’ve downloaded many apps that I’ve deleted immediately after opening it. Either it was broken, didn’t do what I thought it would do or I thought to myself, why do I really need this one? Seriously, there are some apps that people invested way too much time and resources on.

So what makes a great app?… Read the rest

App of the week: HippoRemote

photo1A few months ago I bought myself a new toy, a 42 inch LCD TV. I’d been saving up for over a year and I was so excited to get it. The main reason I really wanted this TV was so I could connect my computer and watch Hulu or Netflix on a big screen. Since we don’t have cable, I watch almost all my TV on the computer.

Once getting the TV, I could immediately take advantage of Netflix over the computer and it was great. The only problem I would run into is when when the show ended or I needed to pause of a bathroom break. It was like the old days before remotes. I’d have to get up and press pause or select the next show.… Read the rest

App of the week: Car minder

IMG_0413I’ll start off by being very honest. Taking care of my car the way that it should does not come very natural to me. I’m probably this way for a lot of reasons, some of them good, some of them bad. However, I’ve recognized that this is an area of growth in my life. Actually, I need help. If I don’t get the help I need, I’m probably going to be one of those guys with a cracked engine block because I forgot to put oil in it. I’m probably not that bad, but you get the picture.

A few weeks ago (when I was going to get an oil change) I downloaded Car Minder, and app for the iPhone/iPod touch.… Read the rest

App of the week: Lose It!

lose_itOkay, so I’m starting a new little post series that I’m dedicating to my favorite little applications. Whether they’re apps for you phone or applications for your computer, I’ll share some of the new one’s I come across that I find valuable, cool or interesting. I’ll start with the one I’m using a lot right now. It’s an iPhone app called Loose It! About 6 months after getting to Austin, I set off to lose some weight. In 6 months I lost 20 pounds just by eating less and dropping the cokes. Then for a year I wasn’t very disciplined and gained about 10 of it back. Then just two weeks ago I started a biggest loser competition among my staff.… Read the rest

Picasa awesomeness I discovered on accident

Screen shot 2010-01-01 at 11.43.34 PMLast week I wrote a post comparing flickr to picasa. I’ve been using flickr to manage my photos and as an online backup for 6-8 months. However, I’ve recently switched to picasa both for online backup as well as a lightweight desktop app for editing.

Then I discovered something totally on accident. I plugged my iPhone into my computer to sync. As I was switching through applications that I was running in the background I clicked on the Picasa application and I noticed something. Since my iPhone was plugged in, Picasa found my picture role and offered to import them.

Sweet! I used to have to email photos to myself to get them off my phone (I’m sure there are other ways, I just hadn’t looked into it far enough).… Read the rest

Fellowship One iPhone/iTouch app

Did you hear the news? Several months ago Fellowship Technologies announced that they would release an app for the iPhone. Yesterday I downloaded it for myself. Beautiful.

I imagine it’s just a start. Currently you can just look people up and see family, address and contact information (99% of what I need to do when trying to navigate F1 on my iPhone). It will be interesting to see if they further develop this app to view live check-in’s, manipulate ministry details, and even view submissions on weblink.

Regardless, it’s a great app. It’s free and you can download it now from the iTunes app store.

Click here to read their press release.

Syncing Google Calendar and Contacts with your iPhone

So yesterday I officially switched my work mail to Gmail. I was tired of putting up with Entourage and even more frustrated with my inability to share my work calendar with my wife who manages her/our calendar with Google Calendar. Using Gmail as a catch all account is taking a little bit of an adjustment, but I really like it so far. I need to develop a system with labels and filters, otherwise I think I might drown.

Now that I’m using Gmail, my only calendar is my Google Calendar. However, I wanted to make sure that the calendar on my iPhone syncs with Google. I learned how to do this when I gave my wife my iPod touch.

Go to NuevaSync and create a free account.… Read the rest
