Casting vision to your church staff (Part 3)

I ended yesterday with the introduction of my vision talk to my church staff.

I asked the question, “what would Gateway look like if Next Gen didn’t exist?” I knew what their answers would be. You do too. It actually generates a lot of laughter. We imagine a chaotic place. Kids running everywhere. We imagine a noisy auditorium with squealing kids. Maybe even roaming gangs of Middle Schoolers roughing people up in the parking lot. These were some of the things people said. One person said, “we’d have a lot less people.”

After I got a handful of predictable answers, I let them in on the secret. I told them that the question was a set up. I expected their answers.… Read the rest

Tonight is session one of my church’s leadership weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve used scribble, so I think I’ll use it to tweet to my blog.

Essentially, 500 leaders at Gateway are gathered today and tomorrow for vision for the upcoming year and equipping to lead our church spiritually, life on life! It’s going to be AWESOME!

If you want to follow, many Gatewayers are tweeting at #adv09… Read the rest

Sometimes leaders know when to quit

I_Quit_MaleSeveral weeks ago I was in an off-site staff meeting and I wrote down a scripture passage that I wanted to explore deeper. It concerned the selective nature of Jesus’ ministry.

Mark 1:35-39
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

Today at church, one of the points was “Sometimes a leader knows when to quit.” When your vision is clear and you know what what you’re after, that often means saying no to some really good things.… Read the rest

Gary Haugen is the President and CEO of International Justice Mission.

Social justice is a topic that many are aware of yet we often do little about it. We may even say “well, justice isn’t really my thing.” God may reply, “Then maybe I am not your thing.”… Read the rest

Two days ago I wrote a review on John Burke’s book, “No Perfect People Allowed.” I enjoyed every chapter of the book, but the very last chapter spoke to my heart in a powerful way. I have no doubt that my call is to children, but after reading this chapter, it makes me what to go out and plant an emerging church. Here’s a quote from this chapter:… Read the rest

Submitting to leadership (Ministry Budgets Part Six)

Posted on 08. Mar, 2008 by .

CHARBARN In all of the things I’ve discussed the past 5 days, there was one element that brings it all together. It’s about submitting to the leadership God placed above you. I agree that generally speaking, children’s ministry budgets are under funded. I do believe that children’s pastors should present the need, present a vision and ask for what is appropriate. However, what leadership decides as a ministry budget needs to be accepted. Again, it comes back to loaves and fishes.

We have to remember that God will bless us when we make the best use of what he’s given us. He’s honored when we creatively expand the resources we’ve given. When we are faithful in these things, he will entrust us with more.… Read the rest
