Don’t let SOPA return!

A few months ago, SOPA and PIPA were shut down because Americans showed policy makers that we value freedom. If you missed that post, you can read it here. It was one of the most successful campaigns and the bills were totally shut down as policy makers pulled their support.

However, the Obama administration is still voicing support of SOPA. Wired noted recently that:

“The White House did say that it wouldn’t endorse a bill that endangers freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risks, or negatively affects the DNS system. On the other hand, it says elsewhere that “combating online infringement” — not protecting free speech — is a governmental priority “of the highest order.”

I got an email from Fight the Future yesterday stating that:

What is the White House working on exactly? Just the other day, the administration sent a letter to Congress to demonstrate their support for new internet censorship legislation.

Obama’s speech didn’t look like brain washing to me

In case you missed it, here is Obama’s speech to America’s children. Did you watch it? Did your children watch it? Did you watch it with your children?

I felt I needed to follow up from my post on Monday.

I thought the speech was good. Actually it was really good, a message many of our kids need to hear. It was about failure, hard work and taking ownership of our future. Regardless of whether we like it or not, the president of the United States is someone we all respect because of the tradition of the office. Most kids look up to this office. What kid hasn’t dreamed of one day being the leader of the free world?

So, this is a great message for our kids to hear.… Read the rest

Obama’s speach to our children

obama with mic jan 18 2008Tomorrow our president is going to address the students of our nation. However, a significant portion of our children will not hear what he has to say. Many parents are pulling their children from their classrooms because they’re afraid that our president is going to indoctrinate our children. Many schools are not even showing the speech because parents have thrown a fit and they are afraid of the backlash. They’re afraid that our president’s views on abortion, health care, marriage and other policies might defile our children.

I’m not really sure I know how I feel about this. The first thoughts that come to my mind are not good ones. I understand that people don’t agree with our president’s policies and stance on moral issues, but is this behavior a little juvenile?… Read the rest

Our election from a fresh and different perspective

My good friend Joel Hayslip, whois a missionary to Burkina Faso, West Africa wrote an amazing post on the election. He’s been in Africa now for five years, but happened to be in the US this summer and fall and was able to experience all of the politiacal campaign. Since he’s no longer a resident of the United States (but still a citizen), he had quite an interesting perspective. I thought I’d share it with you here.Read the rest

I haven’t done any political posting on this blog. However, I felt like I’d add my thoughts after the fact. I’ll admit it, I voted for the Republican ticket. Not that I was in love with what the Republicans had to offer. I guess I’m a little disappointed. The comment I’ve used on many occasions was, “Is this really it? Are these the only two we could come up with?” I feel like I maybe my statements were off though. I think the Democrats had a powerful ticket, and those in support of Obama seem to REALLY love Obama. I just didn’t get that impression with McCain. He’s just the guy who won the nomination. Although it’s easy to get frustrated with politics as it seems to be a very elaborate game, I usually vote on key issues revolving around economics, moral issues and such.… Read the rest
