Come hang out with me at Orange

This April I’ll be attending my 5th Orange Conference and I must say that I’m very excited. Last year was an incredibly experience from connecting with some of my favorite people, learning from some of the greatest leaders in ministry and being honored with the opportunity to lead a handful of breakouts.

Well, I must have done all right as I’ve been invited back again to lead another breakout. I’ll be leading Preconference Workshop #3 “How To: Connect with Parents Via Social Networking.” This is on Wednesday at 1:30 PM. Here’s what I’m excited about.

  • If you select the “Social Media in Ministry” track, you’ll find four workshops being taught by Matt McKee, Gina McClain and me. I think it’s a fun that I get to be a part of this track with some of my best friends in ministry.

In the last three days I came across two fun but touching videos about the birth of Christ as told through social media. What if Joseph was on facebook? What if the shepherds were twitter addicts? Enjoy!

Backup your social media with Backupify

logoI just learned about Backupify. I haven’t even had enough time to review it (just signed up for an account this week). Essentially, backupify will create a backup of most of the social media you’ve got floating around the net. Things like gmail, hotmail, facebook, flickr, twitter and many of the other big ones. It’s a totally new startup and right now they’re trying to make a name for themselves and build their business. If you sign up before January 31st, you get their service free for life. Who knows what it will look like 6 months from now, but I figured it’s worth signing up.

Check it out here.… Read the rest

A few months ago I posted this video about the power of social media. Then a few weeks ago I found the video below from David Wakerly’s blog. I’m probably just preaching to the choir here, but this social media thing is a pretty big deal. Are you utilizing all it has to offer for your ministry?

Facebook pages and twitter

Over the past year I’ve loved the integration of twitter in facebook. I can update my facebook status from twitter which is BEAUTIFUL. Having this same feature for facebook page would be equally awesome. However, it’s not quite there yet. Quite frankly, I can’t get it to work. I have friends who say that they’ve installed the selective twitter app on their page and they have gotten that to work (this is where you type #fb at the end of all your tweets and it updates your facebook status). I haven’t though. I’ve even offered people money to get it working on my page, yet no one has been successful yet. I think it is becasue I use the twitter app on my regular facebook profile and I’m trying to use the selective twitter app on my page and the two just don’t like each other.… Read the rest

Facebook pages or groups

facebookLast week I posted a video about integrating social media in our ministries. One great way to do this is using facebook. I’m still a noob at using facebook specifically for ministry related stuff, but I thought I’d explain the differences between groups and pages and how you want to use both.

First of all, you probably want to use both. Both have different functions. Groups have been around longer and of someone has experience with only one, it’s probably groups. However, most people are using groups to do things where they probably should use pages. Let me explain.

Groups
Groups can be big or small, but they’re mostly suited around connecting people around ideas, thoughts or specific people. The discussion boards, photos, links and allow for great connection, discussion and collaboration.… Read the rest

Yesterday I introduced you to my ministry team. We were invited to teach a lunch session at Orange about collaboration. I think the five of us all had some great things to say about collaboration, but more than that we just told the story of how we’ve done it with each other. The videos below are what we taught. Gina’s video hasn’t been uploaded yet… so come back soon to check that one out.

brown-bag-fullHey people. Something you may not have known about yet.

On Thursday and Friday of next week, several bloggers will be hosting brown bag lunches. It’s an opportunity to network and learn more about blogging, social media and network collaboration. So if you’re interested, here are some details.

Stop by the upper level of the Arena to meet over twenty bloggers that write about their experience with children’s and student ministry. We’ll be having brown bag lunches on Thursday and Friday with a handful of the bloggers to discuss very specific topics in an informal setting.  Space is limited and will be filled on a first come-first served basis. Meet at the specified time at the top of the escalators in the Arena to head to the lunch location.… Read the rest

CM Connect: Pleasantly surprised

CaptureI mentioned CM Connect a week ago as a new social network for Children’s Pastors. Initially I wasn’t sure what to think of it. My first impression was “Great, here’s another thing for me to update and check several times a day.” Amazingly, there are well over 600 Children’s workers registered. That’s great community. In addition, the entire experience of making friends, adding to discussions and even creating a new group is so incredibly easy. I even created my own group. It was so easy and fun. I’ll be interested too see where this goes in the long run. If you still haven’ been around to look, you totally should!… Read the rest
