Start thinking Orange with #THINKORANGE

So, the new twitter hashtag is only a day or two old. As we were getting ready to start Orange Week 2.0 we started asking, “how should we tag this?” Should we used #orange11, #orangeleaders or even start a new tag like #orangeweek. Several of us expressed frustration of having so many different hashtags to communicate orange. So, lots of people put their heads together to come up with one, all encompassing hashtag. So, if  you’ve got anything to say on twitter about Orange, the Orang Tour, the Orange Conference, ministry to families or any of that stuff, use #THINKORANGE. Isn’t that great? Even if you just need a ask a question to a bunch of Orange Thinkers, use the tag and message the community.

Several weeks ago I posted on my blog the books I wanted to read this year. One of them was Think Orange by Reggie Joiner. Don’t call me a hypocrite, it’s been on my stack of books to read. So, my friend Henry Zonio is leading a group blogging project around the book Think Orange, so I figured I’d join in. I actually didn’t get in early enough to participate, but I’ll be reading along and commenting (if I can keep up). BTW, Henry’s giving away a ticket to Orange, so if you really want to go to Orange, jump over to his blog and PARTICIPATE!

I opened this book and got no further than the first paragraph of the forward by Andy Stanley. Let me quote it for you:

When we started Norht Point Community Church in 1995, many of our staff and core volunteers leaders were parents with young children. The idea of partnering with the family seemed natural. We were church leaders and we were parents. In a way, what we were attempting to build was for our own families and the futures of our own kids. Reggie Joiner took on the responsibility of creating those environments for families.

There’s something here to learn and it doesn’t have anything to do with Reggie Joiner, Orange or family ministry. North Point built one of the strongest ministries to kids and families because that was what was very relevant to the leadership core at North Point. They had skin in the game and they were doing it for their own kids as much as they were doing it for others.

When it comes to the core leadership at your church, what are they most invested in? What ministry is most relevant to where they’re at? I’d be willing to bet that whatever that thing is, it’s got the most potential to flourish in your church. I’m sure there are exceptions to the rules, but that’s just the way it is. You’re not going to have to convince your senior leadership of something that’s already important to them.

Here I am with Karen Tolmich, the winner of my “Think Orange” give-away.

We actually played twitter tag for two days to connect, but it eventually worked out… she got her book. I bought a dozen of these books for my team as well. I’ve thumbed through most of it already. Great book for anyone leading an “Orange” ministry or even thinking about going “Orange.”

So, if you didn’t pick up a copy – you’ll have to wait until this summer. However, it’s worth the wait!

Well, this is it! We have a winner. Titus picked one really quick. I ended up filming a quick video while Titus was eating which gave me a little time to edit, upload and post before the day got away from us. The video is a nail-biter for sure. ;)

If you just can’t wait, tab down to the end of this post to see who the winner was, but remember… Good things come to those who wait.

This was a lot of fun. I think I’ll try to give stuff away on the blog more often. Perhaps while I’m at Orange I’ll see if I can get some more free stuff to give away. Woo hoo!

So, I think that everyone who participated is a winner. Yes, I’m saying this to make you feel better. You lost. However, I want to help. I’m so incredibly honored that you read my blog. Really, I am. It’s been my dream to encourage, equip and share ideas with others in Chidlren’s Ministry as well as pick up some new ideas of my own. After two years, Children’s Ministry Online has totally become that. So, if you posted your comment on my book give-away page and you’re coming to Orange, I’m going to give you a special prize. Yes, I’m going to give you something from Texas.

What “something from Texas” are you going to give us? Well, I’m not sure yet. But Texas is a fine state and really just about anything from Texas would improve your life immediately. So, I’ll have something for you at Orange. I’ll either have it with me or I’ll have Sam hold it for me in his fanny pack.

So, the winner is: Karen!

Sorry that came across a little unimpressive. I didn’t get your last name but I do have your email. We’ll meet up at Orange and I’ll get you your prize. I’ll get a picture or some video of the hand off for sure. Congrats! Below is Karen’s winning post:

I attended Catalyst for the first time last year and now I’m attending my first Orange Conference. I’ve excited but nervous too. I’ve taught preschool at my church for almost 5 years but I’ve recently become the leader for the Preschool area. The reason I want this book – because I had a hard time even typing that last part “leader for the preschool area.” I love the kids and will do anything to help them grow, but I’m WAY out of my comfort zone being a leader. I’d love to know more about how to Think Orange and help my volunteers.

By the way, I found you via Twitter and I’m loving your blog!
