Anyone planning to lose a few pounds in 2012?
Posted on 09. Jan, 2012 by Kenny.

I’m sure that’s probably most people who are reading this… except for Jonathan and Sam (skinny guys make me mad!). Ha!
Along with probably 90% of other people who made resolutions for 2012, I’ve made a commitment to drop some weight. Two years ago I worked every hard for three months to lose a little over 10% of my body weight. It was awesome and I was so proud of myself. Although it took me a good two years, I’m pretty much where I began two years ago… but a little more angry about it.
Here’s what I’ve learned about myself. I work best when there are goals I’m shooting for and I thrive when I’m going after it in community. Make it a little competition where the winner takes a prize… even better. Hey, I can’t change who I am, it just the way I’m wired. My involvement in a “biggest loser” competition is what helped me drop all the weight. However, after I did it, I didn’t set a new goal. I didn’t engage in a new “contest” that would keep me pointed toward healthy living. I just went on with life and got by butt kicked.
So, I’m ready for round two with a plan not to be here again. I’ve already started and amazingly have already lost 7-8 pounds… but I’ve got a long way to go. So, I’m wondering if there are any others who have “resolutions” to lose some pounds but not the accountability to keep you moving toward the goal. I thought I’d reach out to the Kidmin community and see if there were some who would be interested in doing this together. Anyone interested? I’m thinking of a 3-4 month “biggest loser” competition… maybe one with a prizes for the top losers. Let me know if you’re interested. No worries, I’m not going to ask anyone to blog their weigh ins or anything, we can do everything through a facebook group.
If you’re interested, either reply to this post or contact me through the contact button above.

App of the week: Lose It!
Posted on 07. Feb, 2010 by Kenny.
Okay, so I’m starting a new little post series that I’m dedicating to my favorite little applications. Whether they’re apps for you phone or applications for your computer, I’ll share some of the new one’s I come across that I find valuable, cool or interesting. I’ll start with the one I’m using a lot right now. It’s an iPhone app called Loose It! About 6 months after getting to Austin, I set off to lose some weight. In 6 months I lost 20 pounds just by eating less and dropping the cokes. Then for a year I wasn’t very disciplined and gained about 10 of it back. Then just two weeks ago I started a biggest loser competition among my staff. There are two objectives.
- The person who loses 10% of their body weight first… and maintains it until the end of the competition.
- The person who loses the most percentage of their body weight at the end of 3 months.
The competition is fierce, but I’m setting my sites to win both objectives. I downloaded this application a year ago, but have been leaning on it heavily since starting this competition.
With Lose It!, you enter your goal weight and at one pace you hope to lose your weight. You enter your current weight every day and log in all the food you eat and your exercise. With both food and exercise, Lose It! has hundreds of pre-determined foods and exercises you can choose from as well as the ability to add your own. Lose it! has a beautiful interface that lets you know how you’re doing each day or week so you know where you have room to splurge or where you need to stay strong. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to eat something, so I’ve looked to see how much I’ll need to run to cancel the food out.
Also with Lose It! you can link it to twitter and facebook to share with others your progress (if you want that kind of accountability) and I get an email from Lose it! a few hours after every meal time to remind me to record my food.
Losing weight is hard, and this app is taking some of the labor out of the process. It’s a free app, so if you have an iPod or iPhone, download and see if it works for you.

No more of this stuff…
Posted on 07. Aug, 2008 by Kenny.
Talk about accountability. I’ve been telling people around the office that I’m not drinking any more coke (for you Yankees, that would include all forms of “soda,” “pop” or even “soda-pop”). About 5 years ago I gave up regular coke. Within a short time I lost about 10 pounds. Since then I’ve been a diet drinker. Let me tell you, I love my Diet Pepsi. But no more. First of all, Sara I realized that we’re spending somewhere close to $30 a month on coke for the house. So, at the beginning of the summer we stopped buying coke for the house. This was for a purely financial motivation. We still drink coke if we’re eating out, but around the house we’ve been drinking Kool Aid! OH YEAH! Actually we’re too cheap for Kool Aid. We’ve been drinking “Flavor Aid.”
But I’ve had enough. Sure we’re saving money, but I don’t feel healthy. Due to my height and build, I carry my weight very, very well. Most people are surprised by how much I way. Believe it or not, but I way more than that average Sasquatch and I don’t want to weigh more than a Sasquatch. I got on my scale the other night and it went all the way around and touched the zero. I don’t know that it matters what number my scale actually goes to, but what really matters is that the needle did a full circle. Scale needles were never meant to get that kind of movement.
So, I started by eliminating the sweet junk. No more sodas and no more sweets that seem to be stashed everywhere around my office. No more Marshmallow Mateys. In addition I’ll be running in the evenings. It’s been a while since I’ve had a healthy exercise routine. So, I’m looking forward to making that a regular practice in my life again. In a few months I’ll be heading off to a very nice vacation with my wife and I’d really like to enjoy some hiking and other outdoor activities. I believe that getting healthy now will help me enjoy my time off much more.
So if you see me sipping on a Diet Pepsi, you have my permission to punch me in the neck.
