When I took 20 4th and 5th graders to Ensenada, Mexico in 2007, it was my goal to maintain a strict 1:3 ratio of adults to kids. In the end, we kept a 1:2 ratio. Adults participating ranged from chaperones who had small roles other than experiencing a mission trip with their child as well as leaders who oversaw a group of kids, led programs or oversaw major elements such as food service/planning, ministry activities or transportation. Regardless, every adult filled out an Adult Participant Application. In addition to this, they filled out a volunteer application and had a background check.
