Child Dedication: Know any good songs?

Posted on 01. Mar, 2009 by in Early Childhood, Fresh Ideas, Parents, Resources

Okay, this Sunday we’re doing a child dedication. We’re revamping many things about this dedication, so I’m going to write about it this week.

However, I need a little help. I’m creating a few slide shows for the dedication service and I need some songs to play for the slide show. I’m not looking for just “Christian” music, but anything current that seems appropriate for the situation, positive songs about kids, parents and whatnot. Again, something fairly current.

I’m probably going to use a Jack Johnson song from the Curious George soundtrack, but I’d love to find two or three more.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Later this week I’ll tell you exactly how I’m doing the slideshows, somthing I’ve never done before. Thanks for your help!

We use Legacy by Nicole Nordeman. Not terribly current but it’s got a great message and it sets up our dedication nicely. Plus @rbradley76 knocks it out of the park everytime she sings it.

Hey Kenny! A couple of ideas… It’s by no means a new song and I don’t know if it would work for what you’re looking for but check out Warren Barfield’s “Soak It Up”. And yeah, I love the Curious George soundtrack! Oh and Aaron Roughton (from Gateway) has a bunch of really good songs that might work. He’s got one called “This Moment” that’s really upbeat and sweet. And one called “I’m Smiling”. And I think a couple are about his kids… “Baby Blue Eyes” is jazzy and fun. You can go hear and listen: http://www.aaronroughton.com/Music.html. Good stuff! I’ll let you know if I think of anything else. =)

You should check out two award-winning children’s albums. 1 is American Heroes #3 by Jonathan Sprout, featuring original songs about various historical figures (jonas salk, milton hershey, and others). The other is FUNKY KIDZ, a dozen of New Orleans’ acclaimed artists (Nevilles, The Radiators and more) doing covers of classic kids songs. Perfect for the kid in all of us! http://www.funkykidzmusic.com Let me know if you’d like more info or if you want me to send you the cds.

    Best,

Wow, I got an amazing response. I can’t wait to check out these songs. Okay, don’t laugh at me here. Part of the reason I have this blog is to be a blessing to others. I also do this to connect with others… expanding my network. Last of all, I do this to help me. This post is a classic example. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve got back to by blog to find a link to a resource I’ve written about.

Because I have my twitter feed update my facebook status, I had some responses on facebook to this question. So, here are too more suggestions from facebook friends:

“Sweet Pea” by Amos Lee… super cute and feel good.
“Let my life song sing to you” Casting Crowns

This is an old song, but everybody knows it and I believe Joe Cocker wrote it for his child or grandchild… You are So Beautiful to Me. Looks like you’ve got plenty of songs to choose from though. Have fun!
