Baptism idea

Our new Children’s Pastor for our South Campus sent me this video. Since then I’ve seen it a few other places. The first time I saw this I had a stupid grin on my face. The guy who sent this to me messaged the email as “future baptisms at Gateway.” We’re pretty “out there,” but I think this might be a little extreme.

A mountain I keep thinking about

pikes-peak-road1If you’ve been following my tweets these last few weeks, you’ve seen that I’ve been getting in shape for something. Well, here it is. Here is why I’ve been in the gym 3-5 times a week.

Depending on the weather, Sara and I are going to climb Pike’s Peak on September 15th or 16th. Pike’s Peak is one of the 52 “Fourteeners” in Colorado with an Elevation of 14,110 feet. It’s a 13 mile hike from the trail head to the top of the summit (we’ll have someone pick us up from the top). We’ll hike up over 7,000 feet of elevation. Because afternoon thunderstorms are such a menace, we’ll begin our hike by 4:30 in the morning and hopefully summit sometime after lunch.… Read the rest

God answers silly dog prayers

So our dog was missing for more than 48 hours. Sara was starting to get more upset about losing Francie. Good tempered and friendly dogs like Francie tend to be kept by dog finders (especially dogs without collars). Last night I had this very conversation with my wife. “Yeah, Francie could be miles away by now or she could literally be right across the street.”

Well, today Sara got a call on her cell phone. Our neigher only from four houses down saw Francie on Saturday morning and put her in her backyard before leaving for work. Our neighbor has been busy with work and did not yet have the time to make her own posters. Turns out that while Sara’s been worried sick, Francie has been having the time of her life with another dog and a young child (who insisted on giving Francie a makeover).… Read the rest

Swine Flu?

Question for you.

Has anyone had a child visit your church who was diagnosed a day or two later to have Swine Flu?

If so, what did you do? What did you communicate to the parents of children who attended the same room of the infected child? I’ve noticed that Swine Flu has been going around and I wanted to get this information out to those who might need it.… Read the rest

Another thought on volunteers

Two weeks ago I did a little series on requiring parents to serve. Last Sunday night I was at Taco Bell with one of my volunteers (to me he’s more of a friend than “volunteer”). He had been reading my posts and shared with me his story about volunteering. Over a year ago I had a chance to share vision to our church and recruit new volunteers. My friend’s wife signed him up. He was reluctant to volunteer, but she knew he liked kids. His intention was to sign up for something he could do every other week. However, when I talked to him about becoming a small group leader, I didn’t really give him an option other than every other week.… Read the rest

Silly dog prayers

IMG_0155In Children’s Ministry, silly dog prayers come with the job. What can you say, kids love to pray for their pets. We explain that God cares about the things that are important to us, even if it involves our pets.

It’s only fitting that today I offer up my own silly dog prayer. Our 4 and a half year old chocolate lab got out of the backyard on Saturday. Sara noticed that she was gone within the hour, but we haven’t seen her since. There’s been a lot of driving around, a lot of posted signs and a lot of prayers. I don’t think we’re anywhere close to winning the “Dog Owners of the Year” award, but we really miss our Francie.… Read the rest

Week in review

This week past week was unbelieveably busy. Seriously, I can barely believe it all happened.

Essentially I wrapped up our new volunteer handbook which included fine tuning our mission, strategy and values. Then on Tuesday night we trained a good chunk of our volunteers. The training focused primarily around the volunteer handbook, our mission/strategy/values and our expectations. Then on Wednesday and Thursday we focused on getting ready for our Lock-In which brough in 133 kids and 45 leaders. Following that was a child dedication on Saturday moring. We wrapped up the week with a full day of Sunday services.

Unfortunately it has been my busy schedule which has kept me from blogging.

So, this week looks better (a little bit) and I should be getting back to the blog some this week and at full force the following week.… Read the rest
